We have approximately two weeks left in what would be considered our regular tax season. As you are aware the 2019 tax filing season has been extended through July 15th due to the COVID-19 virus. As a result, you will not need to file an extension this year unless you are filing your tax return after July 15th.
In accordance with, Governor Walz’s “Stay at Home” Policy our office will be closed to visitors, but our tax professionals will still be processing tax returns during this time. While we will be in the office, our doors will be locked and not open to visitors. If you would still like to get your tax return to us between March 29th and April 12th you can place your tax information in the drop box located in our office foyer, submit them via our secure portal (please contact us if you are not already setup on our portal and want to deliver them electronically), or you can send your information to us via the mail.
Returns that are processed during this stay at home period will be submitted to you through the mail and/or through our secure portal, unless you want to pick up your return once the “Stay At Home” Policy has been removed.
While the date of the federal government submitting the economic stimulus funds is unknown (projected April 6th), they will be using your 2018 tax information in the interim to determine the amount you are eligible for if your 2019 tax return has not been filed yet. We recommend filing your 2019 tax return as soon as possible if your income is lower in 2019, and you were above the $75,000 threshold for single filers in 2018 and the $150,000 threshold for joint filers. In addition to this, you should also file if you have additional dependents in 2019 to ensure you receive the maximum amount of stimulus funds.
Our office hours From March 29th – April 15th are Monday – Thursday from 9:00 – 6:00 and Friday from 9:00 – 4:00. Starting April 16th our hours will be 9:00 – 4:00, Monday – Friday. We will offer evening appointments when we can, but with summer often being filled with kids sports and family activities we are not commiting to a set evening schedule yet.
We are asking that all 2019 returns that we will be processing be in our office by Friday, June 19th to ensure your returns will be filed by July 15th. We are not planning on offering extended hours after April 15th but may consider being open one evening a week if we deem it necessary. This June 19th deadline is necessary due to the number of returns we expect to process the last month of the extended tax season, and want to make sure we have enough time to process the returns during our regular office hours and not require our tax professionals to work extended hours during that time.
I hope you and your loved ones remain healthy and experience minimal hardship during this time. Please continue to support your local businesses during and after this time so that once this situation is over, they will be able to serve our communities going into the future.
